Unbalanced diet and unhealthy lifestyle are the leading causes of increasing the risk of colorectal cancer. Early recognition of symptoms and prevention are important, helping to reduce the morbidity rate as well as increase the patient’s chance of survival.

Colorectal cancer is one of the most common cancers in the world, with an increasing trend in young people. Globally, colorectal cancer is the third most commonly diagnosed. According to statistics in 2018, there were 1.8 million new cases worldwide.
In Vietnam, colorectal cancer is among the 10 most common cancers, the third most commonly diagnosed malignancy in women and the fourth in men. According to the Vietnam Cancer Society, the incidence of this disease is higher in men than in women. During lifetime, there are 5% incidence risk of colorectal cancer in man and 4% in women.
Colorectal cancer in the early stages can cause pain or dull pain, patients can tolerate or pain spasmodically. The pain is often out of sync with meals and can appear at any time. In some cases, there is no pain, but there is a feeling of heaviness in the abdomen. The cancerous lesion is not always below the pain point. Sometimes the left colorectal cancer but the pain point is in the right iliac fossa. Symptoms of digestive disorders such as constipation often appear after the pain, laxatives only work temporarily, so does bleach. Sometimes the stool is loose, 4-5 times a day, there is blood and pus in the stool, so it is easy to confuse it with dysentery.
To help diagnose the disease, it is necessary to perform subclinical tests such as: X-ray film, ultrasound, rectal-colonoscopy, biopsy, detection of CEA antigen. carcinoma embryonic antigen), which is a carcinoma embryonic antigen…
Colorectal cancer starts in the colon or the rectum. Recently, the Department of Gastroenterology – Hepatobiliary Surgery, Bach Mai Hospital has successfully performed laparoscopic surgery to remove the entire mesentery through the anus for patients with low rectal cancer. The surgery is called TaTME (Transanal Total Mesorectal Excision). This is a new direction to effectively treat patients with low rectal cancer and anal canal.
II. Methods of prevention
Colorectal cancer is one of the few malignancies that is curable and preventable if detected and treated early. Therefore, if we want to prevent colorectal cancer, we should have regular health examination every 6 months and screening for cancer to detect the disease early. Screening is a method that uses tests to look for cancer before developing symptoms.
In addition, colon cancer screening can find the formation and growth of polyps in the colon, which can be removed before they progress to cancer. Moreover, we also should adjust our lifestyle in a positive way by:
- Drinking 3 glasses of water a day will limit constipation, thereby reducing the burden on the colon
- Increasing erection, eat more foods containing high fiber, supplement vitamin D and calcium – Limit alcohol and tobacco
- Regular exercise helps to keep the body healthy, control weight and relax mentally to help reduce the risk of colon cancer.
