[HEALTHCARE NEWSLETTER JUNE/2023]: IDENTIFYING HEALTH CHARACTERISTICS AND INDIVIDUAL CAPABILITIES THROUGH BLOOD TYPES

The body requires blood for life, as blood plays a vital role in delivering nutrients to organs and removing waste during the metabolic process. So, what are the blood groups? How many blood groups are there, and what is the impact of blood groups on health and individual capabilities?

Part 1. Blood Types and the Impact of Blood Types in Blood Transfusion.

Human blood is classified into several groups based on specific carbohydrates and proteins present on red blood cells. Currently, there are approximately 40 different blood groups that have been identified, but the two most important groups are the ABO blood group system and the Rhesus (Rh) factor. For reasons not yet fully understood, each blood group may have antibodies[1] against other groups. Therefore, when blood from a different group is transfused, the recipient’s antibodies can destroy the transfused blood (antigens[2] on the donor’s red blood cells), causing harm to the body. It is important to accurately classify blood groups and ensure safe immune-matched transfusions.

[1] Antibodies are molecules produced by our immune system to help protect the body against foreign invaders such as bacteria and viruses.

[2] Antigens are substances that, when entering the human body, are quickly recognized by the immune system, which then produces specific antibodies that can specifically bind to those antigens.

Part 2. The ABO Blood Group System.

Blood Type A: This blood type has A antigens on the surface of red blood cells and anti-B antibodies in the plasma. Individuals with blood type A can donate blood to those with blood type A or AB. They can receive blood transfusions from individuals with blood type A or O.

Blood Type B: This blood type has B antigens on the surface of red blood cells and anti-A antibodies in the plasma. Individuals with blood type B can donate blood to those with blood type B or AB. They can receive blood transfusions from individuals with blood type B or O.

Blood Type AB: This blood type has both A and B antigens on the surface of red blood cells and no anti-A or anti-B antibodies in the plasma. It is the least common blood type in the ABO system. Individuals with blood type AB can receive blood from any blood type. However, they can only donate blood to individuals with blood type AB because they have both A and B antigens on their red blood cells.

Blood Type O: This is the most common blood type and is considered the universal donor as individuals with blood type O can donate blood to individuals with any other blood type. Blood type O does not have A or B antigens on the red blood cells but has both anti-A and anti-B antibodies in the plasma. Therefore, individuals with blood type O can only receive blood transfusions from individuals with blood type O.

Tip: What are the basic components of blood?

Blood consists of blood cells such as red blood cells, white blood cells, platelets, and a yellowish fluid called plasma, as follows:

  • Red blood cells (erythrocytes) are responsible for transporting oxygen. Their main function is to carry oxygen from the lungs to the body’s tissues and deliver carbon dioxide from the tissues back to the lungs for elimination.
  • White blood cells (leukocytes) are involved in defending the body against foreign substances. They can engulf foreign particles or bacteria, detoxify harmful substances, produce antibodies, release chemical messengers, and enzymes.
  • Platelets (thrombocytes) are cell fragments without a nucleus. They are produced from mature cells in the bone marrow and play a crucial role in blood clotting, forming blood clots, clot retraction, clot contraction, vessel constriction, repair, immunity, inflammation, and atherosclerosis.
  • Plasma is a watery, pale yellow fluid that carries important substances within the body, such as glucose, iron, oxygen, hormones, and proteins.

Part 3. The Impact of Blood Groups on Health and Individual Capabilities.

The Impact of Blood Groups on Health

Blood Type A: Individuals with blood type A should pay more attention to their digestive system as they tend to have poor digestion and are prone to issues such as stomach pain, gastritis, and stomach ulcers due to their dietary habits. It is advisable to consume less oily, salty, and spicy foods. It is best to have light meals and avoid overeating. Including foods rich in vitamins and fiber in their diet can promote digestive motility and help restore the damaged gastric mucosa, thus protecting the health of the stomach and intestines.

Blood Type B: They have a relatively strong digestive system, making them more prone to weight gain compared to other blood types, so it is important to pay attention to weight control. Another thing to note is that blood type B individuals have some weaknesses in the respiratory system, especially those who have been smoking for a long time and are susceptible to lung-related diseases. You can regularly consume foods that have a beneficial effect on the lungs and nourish them. However, the best approach is to quit smoking as early as possible.

Blood Type AB: Blood type AB is a combination of blood types A and B, possessing both the A and B antigens on red blood cells and lacking A and B antibodies in the plasma. Therefore, individuals with blood type AB exhibit the characteristics and vulnerabilities of both blood types. Additionally, people with blood type AB have a relatively high incidence of allergies and asthma, so they need to pay attention to allergic conditions.

Blood Type O: Blood type O is often referred to as the “universal donor” as they can donate blood to individuals of any other blood type. However, individuals with blood type O should be mindful of their cardiovascular health as they are more susceptible to cardiovascular and cerebrovascular diseases. It is important to pay closer attention to their daily diet, maintaining a balanced and nutritious diet to effectively reduce the risk of cardiovascular and cerebrovascular diseases.

The Impact of Blood Groups on Individual Capabilities

Blood Type A: Individuals with blood type A tend to be sensitive, intelligent, passionate, and cooperative with others. However, they also endure more stress, which can weaken their immune system compared to other blood types. People with blood type A also have leadership abilities but often struggle to seize opportunities due to their tendency for stress, hindering them in decision-making.

Blood Type B: Individuals with blood type B tend to be more balanced. They are empathetic and quickly understand others’ perspectives. Moreover, they make quick decisions and have the ability to focus on specific goals they have set. People with blood type B never give up on their goals, no matter how difficult it may be. They set targets and take resolute actions to achieve them. On the other hand, individuals with blood type B can also have a cool and serious personality.

Blood Type AB: People with blood type AB are considered very charming and have a good sense of fashion. Those with blood type AB often stand out in a crowd and have the potential to become famous. They have a positive spirit, optimism, and are not bothered by trivial matters.

Blood Type O: Individuals with blood type O have a tendency to be loners. They are believed to have intuitive leadership abilities, being focused, self-reliant, and bold. However, at times, individuals with blood type O can become dependent on others as they may give up too quickly. People with blood type O have a better ability to handle stress compared to other blood types and have a strong immune system.
