✦ What is Skin Cancer?

Skin cancer is a condition where the epidermal cells in the body grow abnormally and form tumors. These cancerous cells can spread to other areas and organs of the body, which is called metastasis. There are two main types of skin cancer:

– Melanoma skin cancer: high level of danger, rare.

– Non-melanoma skin cancer:  non-melanoma skin cancer is the most common form of skin cancer, including squamous cell carcinoma and basal cell carcinoma.

✦ Causes of Skin Cancer:

Skin cancer is caused by multiple factors that accumulate over time. Some of the contributing factors include:

– UV rays: This is the main cause of 90% of skin cancer cases, especially for people who do not cover and protect their skin when exposed to sunlight.

– Skin damage: Areas of skin that have been burned, or have had prolonged inflammation or infection, or have been damaged by using low-quality cosmetics can develop squamous cell carcinoma. Some skin conditions can also be a predisposing factor for skin cancer such as actinic keratosis, chronic skin inflammation, immunodeficiency, and xeroderma pigmentosum.

– Artificial light: Stage lights, night lights, light from computer screens,…these are the “evil spirits” that contribute to the increased risk of developing skin cancer.

– Genetic factors: Skin cancer can also have a hereditary component, passed down through conditions such as xeroderma pigmentosum, nevoid basal cell carcinoma syndrome, Gardner syndrome, and Torre syndrome.
